Welcome to Clyde / Galen, NY

Overview

The town of Galen is in southeast Wayne County, bordering Seneca County to the south, and contains the village of Clyde and several hamlets. The town has about 4,500 residents, more than half of whom live in Clyde, an Erie Canal village. Along with the canal, Galen offers a variety of other outdoor activities, such as hunting and fishing, golf and snowmobiling. Wayne Hills Country Club is just three miles from Clyde, and the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge and Audubon Center are nearby.

Essentials

Major retail shopping is available at the Waterloo Premium Outlets, just to the south of Clyde. The village has antique shops, specialty shops, a hardware store and fast-food eateries. For groceries, Clyde has a new Save-a-Lot store that moved into a former grocery store that had been vacant since 2009. The closest Wegmans stores are in Newark to the west and in Geneva, a bit further and to the southwest.

Recreation & Entertainment

Outdoor activities, such as hunting, fishing and snowmobiling are popular here. The Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, with its wetlands and woodlands, provides a resting area for many birds, including bald eagles. The canal offers boating and canoeing.

Transportation & Traffic

Clyde sits at the crossroads of Route 31 (which heads east-west) and Route 414 (going north-south). The village is only about 10 miles from the Thruway (to the south) and Route 104 (to the north). The canal, of course, offers waterway access.

Pros & Cons

You’re halfway between Rochester and Syracuse and close to the Thruway and Route 104. Clyde is a quaint Erie Canal village, with all that offers. The great outdoors is abundant, with options such as the nearby Montezuma Wildlife Refuge. Clyde and Galen are quieter than some of their neighbors, and most entertainment options beside outdoor activities are found elsewhere.
