Welcome to Carlton, NY

Overview

The town of Carlton is in north-central Orleans County, bordered to the north by Lake Ontario and to the south by the town of Gaines. This is where the Oak Orchard River enters Lake Ontario, and where Oak Orchard Harbor and Orleans County Marine Park provide some of the area’s most ideal boating and fishing locales. Carlton is actually made up of 20 communities, including Point Breeze, a hamlet that is adjacent to Oak Orchard River and the marine park, and Lakeside Beach State Park. Much of the river is a state-protected fish and wildlife habitat area, except for the hamlet of The Bridges, a quaint New England-style fishing village which is two miles upriver from Point Breeze.

Essentials

This community has smaller-type stores, such as mini marts and seasonal bait-and-tackle shops. For grocery shopping, it’s a short drive south to Albion, where you’ll find a Top’s Friendly Market supermarket. Albion also has a variety of other shopping options, such as a Walmart Supercenter and pharmacies. Nearby libraries include the Swan Library in Albion and the Yates Community Library, just west in Lyndonville.

Recreation & Entertainment

Fishing and boating are the major forms of entertainment for this area, where you’ll find plenty of marinas, boat launches and boat rentals. Some places, like Captain’s Cove Resort in the hamlet of Waterport, also have motels. The Oak Orchard Lighthouse Museum in Kent is a 30-foot exact replica of the 1872 lighthouse. Brown’s Berry Patch in Waterport has a petting zoo, country store and other activities.

Transportation & Traffic

Route 98 runs north and south through the heart of Carlton. Route 18 – known as the Roosevelt highway here – runs east and west. Route 104, a major east-west highway, is just south of Carlton. The Lake Ontario State Parkway, near the lake to the north, heads east from Point Breeze, its western terminus.

Pros & Cons

You can’t get much better fishing and boating than in this area. Albion, the county seat, is a short drive south, and you’ll find plenty of places to shop there. Rochester is only about 35 miles to the east.
