Overview

Located just about at the direct center of Monroe County, the Town of Gates supports not only several thriving residential areas, but also a mix of industrial and commercial properties. It is, in fact, the headquarters of Wegmans Food Markets and is home to Rochester Technology Park. Properties are affordable here, making it a good place to start a family. With an eye constantly on its youth, several athletic organizations are in place to keep youngsters busy – a swim club, little league, junior football/cheerleading, and youth soccer. An active Community Center hosts programs and workshops for all ages, living up to the town’s motto of “A Community For All People."

Good to Know
The Town of Gates has its own fire department and local police organization; and Gates Ambulance serves the area. The Gates Public Library is located at 902 Elmgrove Rd. (585) 234-9190.

Local Museums & Landmarks
The Franklin Hinchey House is located in Gates – a Gothic Revival home from the 1870’s. The house, on the National Register of Historic Places, sits on three acres of farmland at 634 Hinchey Road… A placard in town marks the spot where the Harris Seed Farm stood in the late 1800’s, on Buffalo Road… and Doud Post, also on Buffalo Road, is the largest America Legion building in the county.

Who Lives Here

Houses here are among the most affordable in the county, and yet the town offers good schools, well-maintained recreational areas, and a number of local work opportunities. Several apartment complexes provide an entry-level option for young professionals to become part of the active Gates community.


Essentials

Gates is home to the popular Rochester eatery, Rick’s Prime Rib, as well as many other dining spots. You’ll find a Wegmans here along wtih the Rohrbach Brewing Co. Sixteen theatres including an IMAX screen are in Gates featuring first- run movies; and you’ll find that the busy area will fill most of your shopping needs.



Recreation & Entertainment

From multiple parks, baseball diamonds and soccer fields to the the bright lights of TinselTown; from the Senior Center to the YMCA, Gates has something for everyone.



Transportation & Traffic

The I-390 & I-490 interchange is here, making transportation to all areas of the county easily accessible. Also running through Gates is the Spencerport Expressway (Rt. 531). Among the roads that take on most of the local traffic are Buffalo, Elmgrove, and Spencerport, along with Lyell and Chili Avenues.



Pros & Cons

Safe, affordable housing is essential to Monroe County; and the town of Gates offers just that. It’s close proximity to the Greater Rochester International Airport makes airplane noise a constant companion, however.
