Overview

Located in northwest Rochester, Maplewood is known for its natural beauty, such as the Lower Falls of the Genesee River, and its planned beauty. Parts of the neighborhood’s landscapes were designed by Frederick Law Olmstead. The area is bounded on the north by the northwest city limits and Holy Sepulchre and Riverside cemeteries; on the east by the Genesee River; on the west by Mount Read Boulevard; and on the south by Driving Park Avenue.




Who Lives Here

Many long-established families have lived here to be close to Kodak. Professionals and some top city and county officials live on streets such as Seneca Parkway. The area is popular with first-time home buyers looking for bargains.




Essentials

There are some family restaurants and fast-food places in Maplewood. High schools include the Aquinas Institute, a private, Catholic school, and Marshall High School on Ridgeway Avenue, part of the city school district. Small, independent shops line Dewey and Lake avenues, and the Maplewood Library is at 1111 Dewey Ave. A Tops grocery is on Lake Avenue near Lexington Avenue, and there’s a Price Rite grocery store at the corner of Dewey and Driving Park avenues. The closest hospital is Rochester General, just across Route 104 in the Irondequoit area.




Recreation & Entertainment

There are three parks in the Maplewood area. A riverside trail is popular with bikers, joggers and hikers. Portions of Maplewood are on the New York Registry of Historic Places and were granted National Historic Preservation status in the 1990s. Tours of some of the elegant Maplewood homes are offered each year. The California Brew Haus, on West Ridge Road, offers live music entertainment




Transportation & Traffic

The main roads are Dewey and Lake avenues for north-south travel and Ridgeway Avenue and West Ridge Road for east-west. Mount Read Boulevard, on the western edge, also provides easy north-south access. Traffic flow is usually pretty smooth in Maplewood.




Pros & Cons

Maplewood has a strong neighborhood association and is close to downtown and the river gorge area. Many large, well-built homes are available at very affordable prices.
